Alessandro Taverna’s programme celebrates the art of the transcription, from Liszt’s reworking of Schubert’s Lieder and Mozart’s Don Giovanni to Egon Petri’s popular version of Bach’s aria Sheep may safely graze. The recital ends with Gershwin’s own version for piano solo of his popular Rhapsody in Blue, made three years after the work was premiered in 1924 in a concert entitled ‘an experiment in Modern Music’.
